What's so Hot in Atlanta?

Moving from a major city to a city that feels so small you wonder how it can even be referred to a as a city in the first place is in a word... depressing.  Living in Atlanta definitely has its perks, but at times all I can see is a BIG commercialized piece of crap!  Where are all the mom and pop stores, yo?  No offense Atlantians.  I know there are some really cool places inside the perimeter.  Grace Bonney from Design Sponge did a really great post about what all Atlanta has to offer design-wise.  Check it out here!  I'm super excited to check some of these places out!
The problem with Atlanta is the horrific traffic... HORRIFIC, I say!  This city does not have a sophisticated public transportation system which makes commuting by car a death wish.  If you are going to live in Atlanta one rule of thumb is to live in close proximity to where you work.    Therefore, I live in a boring suburbia neighborhood right outside of the perimeter.  That's my problem with Atlanta.  If Marta is so much Smarta, then why is there so many people on the roads.  And why does every household need at minimum two cars?

Living in Philly for five years, I became accustomed to walking to work, hopping on the train (a mere block away) to go to some other cool neighborhood in one hot second, and eating at a new restaurant every date night.   I'm afraid I'm just experiencing the relocation blues.

It's surprises such as these that make me miss where I once lived.  While searching for an image to use, I thought the one above suited my said, "relocation blues."  As I click through the images and see the front of the model, I smile.  I know this beautiful person.  She and I attended the same church in Philadelphia.

The irony gives me hope.
Atlanta, you're not so horrible.  I'm just getting to know you after all.

Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Where've you been?

Lately my Facebook page and Instagram is getting a lot more attention than what started all this madness, my blog.  Blog, you are not a middle child, like myself.  Well, maybe you are, but I will give you the content that your audience craves.

It's Flea Market Season, Y'all!

Brooklyn Flea came to Philly, and they BROUGHT it!

Ooooo... I love a pretty bird cage.  I'd throw a terrarium up in that!  The chair was $10.  TEN DOLLARS!!!  A seat cushion is the easiest thing in the world to reupholster and a quick and cheap face-lift.  I would use it as a desk chair.  Should of bought it.  Darn.

Here is some more flea market eye candy...

If I had money falling out of my armpits (did I just say that... I'm going with it), this is what I would buy...

My faves...

I know your eyes must be glued to that pink and black dress... think again... that's a jumpsuit!  LOVE it, but I am not that brave.  Well, not $130 brave.  Maybe if it was $30 I wouldn't feel so bad purchasing it, knowing that what it would take to convince myself to throw it on before work.  Yes, I'm the crazy girl that would actually wear this to work!  My non-profit agency would not know how to handle all this awesomeness.  Ok, I think you get that I love it.  I won't shut-up about it!

Don't skimp on the textiles...

Most vendors at flea markets have prices reduced to wholesale value.  These woven textiles would easily sale for $100 at Pottery Barn.  I can't remember the exact price, but I do remember thinking, "What a steal!"  I couldn't justify buying it for myself, but I think it would be a great house warming gift!

Best Advice...

Shop with friends!  There's nothing like having a gal pal to keep you laughing as you rummage through vintage goods and imagine how your Great Aunt Sal used to make do with a rotary phone!!  What is that, anyways!?!

Friends can be inspiring also, especially when they kinda do this or are on there way of being artisans / designers for a living!  Having insight other than your own is a wonderful thing!  I love to listen to other peoples ideas on how they would dress-up an item.

And don't be intimidated by bringing a babe along.  They're fun and super cute!!

The Brooklyn Flea Market is going to be in Philly every Sunday in Northern Liberties at the Piazza at Schmidt's.  10AM - 5PM.  Rain or shine.

If you just can't get enough of The Tiny Abode outings and need your daily fix, be sure to follow us on Facebook or Instagram.  Our favorite design styles are also collected on Pinterest.  I'll admit it, my Pinterest boards ROCK!

Fave Find @ Golden Nugget Antique Market

Flea Market season is sadly over.  Have you been experiencing the same type of  withdrawals as I have been experiencing?  Luckily, there are a few places near town that know flea market season is something that should never cease to end.  Golden Nugget Antique Market in Lambertville, New Jersey is open year round!!

My Fave Find: a goody box full of designer scarves

The first person that comes to mind when I think of framing scarves is my blogger friend, and a Philly local, Naomi Stein from Design Manifest. Naomi's loft design actually appeared in the June/July Lonny magazine.

Jessica at The Aestate did a feature on framed scarves which can be seen here
I am particularly fond of the Hermes scarves.

And just how adorable is this framed Vera Neumann scarf in this nursery which was featured in Apartment Therapy?

I ended up buying two scarves which I hope to frame.  My sister bought three which she plans on sporting at the shore later this week.  What would you do with vintage scarves?

For your entertainment...

What's a flea market adventure without a lil' dress-up involved?  Here's a pic of my sister and I reverting back to our childhood days.

Are there any flea markets that you love going to in the off season?  I'd love to know your secrets!  What do you look for when you go to flea markets?

A Very Merry Discount... Leopard Flats

One thing that I love about the holidays is finding a great bargain! I've been eyeballing leopard flats for a while now.  As usual, I can rarely afford my own taste (what's new?) like these Kate Spade drool worthy flats.

The shoe above is the Kate Spade Eryn flat that is currently on sale online for $135.  However, most major department stores still have them priced for over $200.   I'm not one to spend over $100 on flats much less $200!!!  That's why when I spotted this look alike by Adrienne Vittadini at Belk for a 70% off discount... I couldn't resist.

The detail is a bit different, but all-in-all, in my opinion, this is a very merry discount!
I hope you are all having a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season!

A Sunday Afternoon

Sunday's are my absolute favorite... a nice cup of coffee, lounging on the couch, catching up with favorite blogs.  I'm telling you, Sunday's are fantastic here at The Tiny Abode.  On this Sunday afternoon I'll be spending my afternoon (at least a full hour of it) catching up on two of my favorite online magazines: Lonny and House of Fifty.  I am absolutely in love with this gold glitz animal print wrapping paper in Lonny, but I have no idea where to buy it!

I'm sure all you craftsters out there could just happily make it yourself.  But I'm a proclaimed BIY-er (buy-it-yourself)!!  So if any of you are up for making it, I would be happy to purchase!

On another note, today is Ann Taylor's last day for their Friend's and Family sale!  Yesterday Jason took me to the King of Prussia mall (God love him) and I came home with two Ann Taylor shirts for a total of $11.00!!!  I couldn't believe it!

Here's what I got:

The one on the left is the Palm Print Halter that originally sells for $78 and the one on the right is the Ballet Neck Striped that originally sells for $32.  I think both will look great with my black linen blazer that I sport weekly.  For your 40% off savings just type in FRIENDS at check-out or print your coupon here.

Hairstyles with Bangs

I have a hair appointment next week...

and my hair is in desperate need of resurrection.

I tend to overextend the time line of what's considered an appropriate time to get a hair appointment, and instead play the "messy hair" card a little too often.  Just ask my all too hip cousin.

So the question is bangs or no bangs?

I'm 99.9% sure that I am going to go for it, but there is still that .1% chance that I will chicken out!

So what do you SAY?

Yay!!!!!
OR
Nay!!

From Runway to Home: Spring 2011color trends

During New York Fashion Week in September 2010, Pantone announced the Spring 2011 color forecasts. Now that Spring has actually sprung, we are keeping our eyes peeled to see if this year's color trends actually come out to play.

 Photo: @issue

Not only can these colors work in your wardrobe, they can be incorporated into your home as well.  We've thrown together a little runway vs. home mix.  Hope you like it!

Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle, something between pink and coral (in my opinion), was proclaimed as the color of the year.  Here are some runway looks from Nina Ricci, Jill Sander, DKNY and Valentino.

Photo: The Fashion Worshiper

Natalie Umbert, designer of Ateleir Natalie Umbert, decided to go bold with honeysuckle!  Check out the peacock rug!!  Look familiar?  I'm still swooning over it!

Sea Green and Yellow

The bedding is from Anthropologie, just in case you're wondering.

Punch Drunk Orange
That's not the real name for this color, but I find it quite suitable.

Earth-tones

Simple and chic...

Just the way we like it.

Moody Blues

There is definitely something dramatic about walking into a blue room.  Adding whites and creams creates a satisfying balance without taking away from the full effect.

Whites
I love wearing and decorating with white!!  It's all about the accessories.  Whether a simple green tote...

Or books by the bounties, colors definitely pop when paired with stark white!

So what do you think about this year's spring color forecast?

Emily Henderson, HGTV Design Star and writer of Style by Emily Henderson, may be whipping up some color trends of her own in this weeks episode (Did we mention this chic scored her on show!?) of Secrets from a Stylist as she transforms Joy Cho's LA space.   Joy, once a Philly girl (but not the only reason we love her), writes her own blog Oh Joy!, and has quite a knack for design herself.  Secrets from a Stylist airs tomorrow night, 6pm PST / 9pm EST.
